ChatGPT Space, Pages, Slides: Real Workspace Rival?
OpenAI's new Space, Pages, and Slides features challenge Google Workspace. Here's what SMB owners can actually replace today and what still isn't ready.
ChatGPT's new Space, Pages, and Slides features are a real move toward productivity suite territory, but they're not a full Google Workspace replacement yet. For SMB owners already living in ChatGPT, these tools reduce context-switching on docs and presentations. The critical caveat: collaborative editing, admin controls, and deep integrations that businesses depend on are still maturing. If your team is 1–5 people and lightly collaborative, there's a genuine case to experiment now. Larger teams should watch, not leap.
What are ChatGPT Space, Pages, and Slides actually for?
OpenAI's new features, Space, Pages, and Slides, are an attempt to keep you inside ChatGPT for more of your workday. Space is a shared environment where people and AI can collaborate on projects. Pages is a document-creation layer built on top of your conversations. Slides lets you generate and edit presentations directly in the platform. If you've been copy-pasting ChatGPT output into Google Docs for the past two years, you immediately understand why OpenAI built these.
The editorial framing from ZDNET's coverage is that this positions ChatGPT as a Google Workspace alternative. That's partially true and worth taking seriously, but "alternative" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Let's break down what's actually changed.
How does Space work for small business teams?
Space is the most structurally interesting piece. It's a shared project environment where multiple people and AI agents can operate together, think of it as a lightweight Notion or a very early-stage shared workspace. You can bring teammates in, work on documents collaboratively, and have AI participate in the work rather than just answer questions on the side.
Anthropically, this mirrors what Anthropic did when it absorbed Cowork back into Claude to streamline agentic workflows. OpenAI is following the same logic: AI should be inside the work, not a tab you flip to.
For an SMB owner, the practical question is whether your team actually benefits from AI being a first-class participant in a shared space versus a sidebar tool. For small teams doing content, strategy docs, or client proposals, the answer is probably yes, conditionally.
What can Pages and Slides actually replace?
Pages produces clean, formatted documents from your ChatGPT conversations. If you've been using ChatGPT to draft SOPs, proposals, or reports and then reformatting everything in Google Docs, Pages removes that step. That's a real time save.
Slides is more limited today. It can generate a structured presentation from a prompt or a document, but design flexibility is constrained and the output looks like early-stage AI-generated decks: functional, not polished. For internal use or a first draft, fine. For a client-facing pitch, you'll still be finishing it in PowerPoint or Canva.
The honest read: Pages is closer to ready than Slides. Both are useful as drafting tools, not final-product tools.
Here's a quick comparison against the tools SMB owners typically use:
| Feature | ChatGPT Pages/Slides | Google Workspace | Microsoft 365 | |---|---|---|---| | AI-native drafting | Strong | Moderate (Gemini integration) | Moderate (Copilot integration) | | Real-time collaboration | Early/limited | Mature | Mature | | Admin controls | Minimal | Robust | Robust | | Third-party integrations | Growing | Extensive | Extensive | | Pricing (business tier) | ChatGPT Team: $30/user/mo | Business Starter: $6/user/mo | Microsoft 365 Business Basic: $6/user/mo | | Offline access | No | Yes | Yes |
The pricing gap matters. ChatGPT Team runs $30 per user per month, and that's before you factor in whether you're keeping Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 anyway for email, calendar, and storage. Most SMBs will run both for some time.
What's genuinely not ready for business use?
Three gaps stand out for any operator thinking seriously about this.
Admin and compliance controls are thin. Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 have spent years building the audit logs, data retention policies, and user management controls that IT-adjacent businesses need. ChatGPT's business and enterprise tiers are improving here, but if you're in healthcare, legal, finance, or any regulated space, you can't treat Space as a primary business environment yet.
Email and calendar are absent. Google Workspace is really Gmail plus Calendar plus Docs. You can't replace a productivity suite without touching communication and scheduling, and OpenAI hasn't gone there. Until they do, this is a workflow layer on top of your existing suite, not a replacement.
Deep integrations are limited. Your CRM, project management tool, and accounting software likely have native Google or Microsoft connectors. ChatGPT's connector ecosystem is growing but not remotely comparable yet.
Who should actually consider switching workflows right now?
Be specific about who this is and isn't for at this moment.
This makes sense to experiment with if you are a 1–10 person team, your primary collaborative output is written documents and presentations, you're already on ChatGPT Team or Plus, and you don't have heavy compliance requirements.
This does not make sense as a primary business environment if you need reliable real-time collaboration across a larger team, you're in a regulated industry, or your workflow depends on integrations that aren't yet supported.
The honest answer is that most SMBs should treat Space, Pages, and Slides as a productivity accelerator layered on top of their existing suite, not a replacement. The replacement conversation is probably 18–24 months out, assuming OpenAI continues this trajectory.
What we'd actually do
- Run a 30-day internal pilot on Pages. Pick one document type your team produces repeatedly (SOPs, client briefs, meeting recaps) and run it through ChatGPT Pages for a month. Measure time saved and output quality before drawing any conclusions about broader adoption.
- Don't cancel Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 yet. Keep your existing suite for email, calendar, and anything compliance-adjacent. Use ChatGPT's new features as a drafting and ideation layer, not a replacement infrastructure.

FAQ
Can ChatGPT Space replace Google Workspace for a small business?
Not yet. ChatGPT Space, Pages, and Slides handle document and presentation creation well, but they lack email, calendar, mature admin controls, and the deep third-party integrations that most small businesses depend on. Treat them as a drafting layer on top of your existing suite, not a full replacement. Revisit in 12–24 months as the platform matures.
How much does ChatGPT Team cost compared to Google Workspace?
ChatGPT Team is $30 per user per month. Google Workspace Business Starter is $6 per user per month. Microsoft 365 Business Basic is also around $6 per user per month. Most SMBs will need to run ChatGPT alongside their existing suite for now, which makes the cost additive, not a replacement savings.
What is ChatGPT Pages and is it actually useful for business documents?
ChatGPT Pages converts your ChatGPT conversations into formatted documents without manual copy-pasting into Google Docs or Word. For SOPs, proposals, and internal reports, it's genuinely useful as a first-draft tool. It's not a final-production environment yet, but it cuts document drafting time meaningfully for teams already working in ChatGPT regularly.
